01. Background

The B&O Museum required a graphic that could effectively engage their younger audience in the upcoming exhibition about the Underground Railroad. This exhibition delved into the B&O's history and its involvement in the Underground Railroad, with a focus on two captivating stories: Henry “Box” Brown's and William and Ellen Craft's.

Questions
  1. How can we appropriately explain the concept of the Underground Railroad to children aged 3 to 12?
  2. How can we adapt the existing exhibition graphics into a print book designed for children and what language adjustments are needed to cater to a "junior" audience?

02. Process

The first phase involved extensive research, which included meetings with the exhibition team. They provided valuable information to be included in the activity. Additionally, I collaborated with the education department, who guided me on selecting appropriate activities for the target age group and identifying content that might be overwhelming for the audience.

Effective communication with all departments throughout the process was crucial in creating a cohesive and informative activity book.

03. Visuals

The visuals of the book utilize the B&O's existing brand language while tailoring it to suit the design language that is specific to its child audience.
This involves blending the typography treatment from the exhibition with the evolving brand language.

The result is a vibrant and colorful book that seamlessly aligns with the captivating stories of the Underground Railroad and the interactive elements of the exhibition.

04 Conclusion

The print graphic was effectively developed and seamlessly integrated into the exhibition. The design successfully engaged the young audience, encouraging them to interact with the exhibition and delve deeper into the powerful history of B&O.

Through this project, I realized the profound impact of design in fostering interactivity and the significance of audience-focused design backed by thorough research.
