01. Background

Swept Under the Rug is a collaborative book that I wrote and designed alongside my Dad, it acts as a time capsule story of the Iranian/Arabic art scene in our small window of time.

Through this book, I aim to share my personal journey of discovery and understanding, shedding light on a captivating story that often remains hidden from mainstream discourse.

02. Research

In the initial stages of my writing, I researched at the library, gaining a deeper understanding of my subject matter. It was during this exploration that I stumbled upon the Bidoun site, where countless blog posts piqued my interest and prompted me to refine my internet searches.

My later research included phone calls with my dad. This journey of discovery eventually led me back home, where I had the opporunity of unconvering my dad's collection of old IDs and letters belonging to his parents.

Amidst the  information a question emerged: How do I fit into this intricate tapestry of cultural heritage and history? This self-reflection became an integral part of my research process, and navigating the multifaceted narrative of Swept Under the Rug.

03. Process

In terms of design, my primary objective was to create a book that offers an effortless and enjoyable reading experience, while breaking away from the conventional norms of publication design.

To achieve this, I drew inspiration from illuminated manuscripts, infusing elements of their captivating styles into the book's overall design.

The fusion of modern design sensibilities with the enchanting aesthetics of illuminated manuscripts provides a unique and contrast-heavy approach to storytelling.

04 Conclusion

"Swept Under the Rug" emerged from a profound and overwhelming reflection on what it truly means to be Iranian amidst the events of 2022, when tragedy was brought to the forefront of media attention for one of the most significant instances. As the idea of writing this book took shape, I initially wrestled with negative emotions and feelings of animosity.

However, with the passage of time, these emotions transformed into a profound sense of weariness and eventually evolved into a meditative prayer, a testament to my deep appreciation for the resilience of the Iranian people and their rich cultural heritage.

In the design process, I made deliberate choices to print the book on three different types of paper, skillfully creating a distinct ambiance for each section. This approach mirrors the three unique narratives intertwined within the book: the internet's story, my father's story, and my own story. These diverse perspectives come together to form a tapestry of interconnected stories.
